Breaking: Internet Sensation and Meme Icon Doge, Kabosu, Sadly Passes Away

Kabosu, the Shiba Inu famous for the “Doge” meme, has sadly passed away at the age of 14, as announced by her owner. Known as the iconic face of Dogecoin and the inspiration behind numerous online jokes, Kabosu had been battling leukemia and liver disease before her peaceful passing on May 24.

Atsuko Sato, Kabosu’s owner, shared the news on her blog, expressing her gratitude to Kabosu’s fans and stating, “Kabo-chan was the happiest dog in the world, and I was the happiest owner.” Rescued from a puppy mill, Kabosu’s exact age was uncertain, with Sato estimating her to be around 18 years old. In 2010, Sato, a teacher from Sakura, Japan, posted a photo of Kabosu crossing her paws on a sofa, which quickly went viral and became a meme, ultimately inspiring the creation of Dogecoin.

Kabosu’s meme, featuring humorous broken English to convey her thoughts, gained immense popularity and even led to the creation of a $4 million NFT. Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency inspired by Kabosu, has now become one of the top cryptocurrencies with a market value of $23 billion, boasting notable supporters like Snoop Dogg, Gene Simmons, and Elon Musk, who often boosts its value with his tweets.

Diagnosed with leukemia and liver disease in late 2022, Kabosu received support from fans’ prayers, with Sato crediting their “invisible power” for helping Kabosu during her illness. In November of the previous year, a $100,000 statue of Kabosu was unveiled in a Sakura park, funded by the crypto group Own The Doge. Sato and Own The Doge have generously donated over $1 million to Save the Children, marking the NGO’s largest crypto donation.

In 2010, Kabosu, a Shiba Inu, gained internet fame for a photo where she skeptically stared into the camera. Atsuko Sato, a kindergarten teacher from Sakura near Tokyo, had adopted Kabosu from an animal shelter and shared the now-famous photo on her blog. The image quickly spread across internet forums and social media, becoming a widely recognized meme, with Kabosu’s skeptical expression becoming a popular element in online jokes and conversations.

Kabosu’s rise to fame led to the adoption of her image as the logo for the digital currency Dogecoin. In April, Elon Musk temporarily changed his Twitter logo to Kabosu’s image, resulting in a significant increase in Dogecoin’s value.
